How to Study the Bible (Part 1)

 Sunday, November 9, 2025

  Preacher: Matthew Battershell

  Psalm 1:2

Have you ever been frustrated at reading the Bible but not being able to retain what you read? Or maybe you’ve lost motivation to read it consistently. Maybe you feel guilty and know you should study more but never quite find the time. Consider:

  • If the Word of God is our daily bread (Matt. 4:4), why don’t we eat it daily?
  • If the Word of God makes us wise for salvation through faith in Christ (2 Tim. 3:15), why do we emphasize worldly wisdom?
  • If the Word of God is healing to our life (Ps. 107:20), why do we not live to remember it?
  • If the Word of God is eternal (Ps. 119:89), then why do we let that which passes away get first place in our life while the Word of God is left for last?

To add even more frustration to the mix, we know the Word of God is of utmost importance yet we often neglect it.

The Word of God:

  • Upholds the universe (Heb. 1:3)
  • Is a light to our path (Ps. 119:105)
  • Imparts understanding to the simple (Ps. 119:130)
  • Is the sword of the Spirit (Eph. 6:17)
  • Is the truth (Jn. 17:17)
  • Is the source of our faith (Rom. 10:17)
  • Is our encouragement unto hope (Rom. 15:4)
  • Is given by inspiration of God making us complete and equipped for every good work (2 Tim. 3:16-17)
  • Is by which we are born again (1 Pet. 1:23)
  • Will never pass away (Matt. 24:35)

So where do we start? Today, we are going to discuss why we should study God’s Word and distinguish between legalism and love. All of this will be framed from the perspective of a marriage. And at the end, you’ll have some homework to do before our next lesson. Love me still?

Why frame this around marriage? Because the Word of God is living and is a Person – Jesus Christ to Whom we will be married!

JOHN 1:1-5,14
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

I. Why Study God’s Word?

  1. This is the battle ground Satan will fight you the hardest on. (Mk. 4:15)
  2. Our nature is to forget, grow apathetic and ignore God’s Word. We must face this fact and overcome our nature with the power of the Spirit living in us. (Jos. 22:5)
    Notice:

    • Diligent heed
    • Love the Lord
    • Walk in all His Ways
    • Keep His commands
    • Cleave unto Him
    • Serve Him

You are not alone in feeling frustrated and even guilty but you must fight to study the Word of God with all your heart and all your soul. It is no surprise all the forces of darkness will come to Distract, cause Distrust, bring Discouragement and Distance you from studying the Word of God.

II. What’s Your Motive?

Think: what drove you to learn something that was difficult? Something had to motivate you. And the best way to get motivated is to love.

1. Love Desires

Love’s desire is a longing and hope toward God’s Word. When we desire another person, we pursue them enough to get to know them because deep inside we have a longing and a hope that knowing them is far better than not knowing them. When we lose desire for someone, we take them for granted, we forget them, we tell ourselves ‘tomorrow I’ll see how they are doing.’

Without desire, we fail to have a longing and hope toward the Word of God. Why would you ever begin to pursue the Word of God if you first don’t desire it? See if you sense some longing and hope of enjoyment and satisfaction in these verses:

PSALM 119:103
“How sweet are thy words unto my taste!
yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!”

JOB 23:12b
“I have treasured the words of His mouth More than my necessary food.”

PSALM 19:9b-10
“The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold;
Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.”

PSALM 119:81
“My soul faints for Your salvation,
But I hope in Your word.”

Love says: I long to know God’s Word (So. 3:1-4)

How do we desire His Word more? Ask Him!

MATTHEW 7:7-8
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. 8For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened”

2. Love Delights

Love’s Delight finds great pleasure in God’s Word. When we love someone, we delight in them enough to spend our time with them. Where you spend your time shows what your heart takes pleasure in. When we lose delight in someone, spending time with them becomes laborious even boring. We begin to delight in spending time with someone else, wishing to be free as fast as possible.

How is it that young people in love can fall asleep on the phone together but older married couples talk of their single days and being free from the ‘old ball and chain’? Somewhere along the way, they stopped finding delight in each other.

Without delight, we stop giving our time to God’s Word. Why would you spend time with the Word of God if you first don’t delight in it?

As we read these verses, see if you sense taking pleasure with spending time in God’s Word:

PSALM 1:2
“But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.”

PSALM 119:16
“I will delight myself in Your statutes;
I will not forget Your word.”

PSALM 119:35
“Make me walk in the path of Your commandments,
For I delight in it.”

Love says: I find pleasure in God’s Word (So. 7:6)

How do we delight in His Word? Spend time with Him!

1 CHRONICLES 16:11
“Seek the Lord and His strength;
Seek His face evermore!”

3. Love is Diligent

Love’s diligence puts in steady, earnest, and energetic effort to God’s Word. When we love someone, we are diligent to protect the relationship from becoming lukewarm and common. When we lose diligence, we cease putting in the effort with God’s Word, leaving our first love. Early anniversaries were huge celebrations; later, anniversaries become forgotten. Jesus told the Church of Ephesus, “Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.” (REVELATION 2:4-5)

As we read these verses, see if you sense steady, earnest, and energetic effort with God’s Word:

PSALM 119:148
“My eyes are awake through the night watches,
That I may meditate on Your word.”

PSALM 119:112
“I have inclined my heart to perform
Your statutes Forever, to the very end.”

PSALM 119:11
“Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You.”

MATTHEW 7:24-27
“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”

Love says I take action to apply God’s Word (So. 7:11-12

How do we become diligent in God’s Word? Obey His Word!

JAMES 1:21-25
“Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and every expression of evil, and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save your souls. 22 Be doers of the word, and not hearers only. Otherwise, you are deceiving yourselves. 23 For anyone who hears the word but does not carry it out is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror, 24 and after observing himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom, and continues to do so—not being a forgetful hearer, but an effective doer—he will be blessed in what he does.”

4. Love is Devoted

Love’s Devotion is ardently dedicated and loyal to God’s Word. When we love someone with devotion, we are dedicated and loyal to them above all other persons. They and they alone have our faithfulness. When we lose our devotion to them, adultery can enter, destroying everything. Without devotion, we leave our dedicated loyalty to God’s Word.

As we read these verses, see if you sense devotion and dedicated loyalty to God’s Word:

PSALM 119:34

“Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law;
Indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart.”

1 TIMOTHY 4:13
“Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.”

NEHEMIAH 8:1-12
“Now all the people gathered together as one man in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded Israel. 2 So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could hear with understanding on the first day of the seventh month. 3 Then he read from it in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law.

4 So Ezra the scribe stood on a platform of wood which they had made for the purpose; and beside him, at his right hand, stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Urijah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; and at his left hand Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. 6 And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God.

Then all the people answered, ‘Amen, Amen!’ while lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

7 Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, helped the people to understand the Law; and the people stood in their place. 8 So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading.

9 And Nehemiah, who was the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, ‘This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn nor weep.’ For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the Law.

10 Then he said to them, ‘Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.’

11 So the Levites quieted all the people, saying, ‘Be still, for the day is holy; do not be grieved.’ 12 And all the people went their way to eat and drink, to send portions and rejoice greatly, because they understood the words that were declared to them.”

Love says: I’m loyal to God’s Word (So. 8:6-7)

How do we become devoted to His Word? Walk with Him!

PSALM 119:1-3
“Blessed are the undefiled in the way,
Who walk in the law of the Lord!
2 Blessed are those who keep His testimonies,
Who seek Him with the whole heart!
They also do no iniquity;
They walk in His ways.”

We see the attributes of Love but what about Legalism?

1. Legalism is Duty

Our desire for reading the Lord’s Word becomes duty. I have to read my Bible or else I won’t be blessed. The second prodigal son dutifully obeyed his father instead of loving his father.

LUKE 15:25-32
“Now his older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and because he has received him safe and sound, your father has killed the fatted calf.’ 28 “But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him. 29 So he answered and said to his father, ‘Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends. 30But as soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him.’ 31 “And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. 32It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.’”

2. Legalism is Drudgery

Our delight for God’s Word becomes drudgery when we feel our study time is taking away from our true desires. Why do I have to study now? Somehow, the Shulamite woman went from delighting in her husband to not even wanting to get out of bed to let him in. What happened?

SONG OF SOLOMON 5:2-8
“I sleep, but my heart is awake;
It is the voice of my beloved!
He knocks, saying,
“Open for me, my sister, my love,
My dove, my perfect one;
For my head is covered with dew,
My locks with the drops of the night.”

3 I have taken off my robe;
How can I put it on again?
I have washed my feet;
How can I defile them?
4 My beloved put his hand
By the latch of the door,
And my heart yearned for him.
5 I arose to open for my beloved,
And my hands dripped with myrrh,
My fingers with liquid myrrh,
On the handles of the lock.

6 I opened for my beloved,
But my beloved had turned away and was gone.
My heart leaped up when he spoke.
I sought him, but I could not find him;
I called him, but he gave me no answer.
7 The watchmen who went about the city found me.
They struck me, they wounded me;
The keepers of the walls
Took my veil away from me.
8 I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem,
If you find my beloved,
That you tell him I am lovesick!”

How often have we made excuses not to meet with our Lord, spend time with Him, it’s a drag – only to later regret it! Our Lord is NOT codependent and desperate for us – if studying the Word is a drag to you, beware lest one day you find yourself in a place where the Lord is not to be found!

3. Legalism is Disregard

When we fail to be diligent with the Word of God, we can grow to disregard it. It’s not that big of a deal to miss study… we do not pay attention to the Lord’s warnings; we begin to listen to opinion rather than His Truth. We fail to keep His Word. To Jesus, it is a big deal!

JOHN 14:24: “Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. The message you hear is not my message, but the Father’s who sent me”.

4. Legalism is Disdain

When we lose our devotion to the Word of God, we disregard it for our own opinion and frame of mind. Emotionalism drives our understanding rather than God’s unchanging truth. Today’s culture is full of examples of so-called Christian’s disliking the Word of God and thus twisting it to say whatever they want, from topics of abortion, being pro homosexual, to the prosperity Gospel. Heresy and false teaching is the fruit of not being dedicated and loyal to God’s Word.

2 PETER 3:15-16
“and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.”

III. What do we do now?

  1. Seek (desire): question, search with all your heart and soul (Deut. 4:29)
    Guard against Distraction
  2. Meditate (delight): ponder, pray, converse with one’s self (Ps. 119:15)
    Guard against Distrust
  3. Read (diligent): get to know (Rev. 1:3)
    Guard against Discouragement
  4. Take Action (devoted): store in your heart, teach, talk, recite, write down (Deut. 6:6-9)
    Guard against Distance

IV. homework

Study Genesis chapter 24 and see where it takes you. Have fun, think, ponder, wonder – even ask questions! There are no boundaries. Be honest and pay attention to Distraction, Distrust, Discouragement and Distance. Share with someone what you did to overcome!
