Why Does Christianity Condemn Homosexuality and Other Consensual Sexual Relationships?

God created sex and gifted it to humanity to be sacred and beautiful, to bless us and to procreate. God desires us to honor and protect His gift of sex and that’s good news!

In fact, we have an entire book in the Bible, the Song of Solomon, dedicated to passionate romance and holy sex. God is not a killjoy against our sexuality, rather, Satan twists what is natural and righteousness to seem weird and wrong.

The Beauty and Sacredness of Sex in Marriage

Sexual union between a husband and wife is sacred and beautiful; God doesn’t forbid sex in a marriage – He encourages it (1 Cor. 7:3-5)!

However, God defined marriage in a way our culture rejects: between one man and one woman. Jesus confirms this definition to us:

MATTHEW 19:4-6

“…He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’… Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

This is God’s beautiful and sacred design for human sexual fulfillment. Thus, God takes sexual sin outside of His design of marriage between one man and one woman very seriously, not because He hates us, but because it is destructive and harmful to us.

Imagine cozying up to a warm fireplace on a cold winter night; the flames dance around in a mesmerizing way and its warmth satisfies you. Yet suddenly you notice a devastating spark jump outside the fireplace, beginning to creep along the nearby curtain—are you still relaxed? No! In desperation, you jump to your feet realizing you only have seconds before everything you own is destroyed.

How could this fire be both pleasurable and destructive at the same time? It comes down to the protection built around the fire. In that instance, you understand the protective boundaries of the fireplace are necessary to keep the flames from burning down everything you own.

In the same way, God’s covenant protection of marriage safeguards the beauty of our sexuality, which is why, in His great love, He gives us sexual boundaries. There are clear and devastating consequences to not heeding the Word of God, not just for the homosexual but also for the heterosexual who sins:

EXODUS 20:14

“Thou shall not commit adultery”

Adultery is one example of the fire of sex escaping the protection of marriage and burning down everything you love.

Likewise, God commands: “you shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.” (Lev. 18:22)

But why? Because homosexuality is unnatural and therefore harmful:

ROMANS 1:26-27

“For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.”

The human body does not support the homosexual act and consequences like AIDS, severe sexually transmitted diseases and high rates of promiscuous living are byproducts of this lifestyle. The CDC identifies receptive anal intercourse as the sexual activity with the highest risk of HIV transmission when a partner has transmissible HIV.[1]

These are sad and dangerous consequences of living outside of God’s plan and His perfect creation:

ROMANS 1:28-29

“And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with unrighteousness, sexual immorality and wickedness…”

Yet wherever you may be while reading this, understand God also has His gift of Grace and forgiveness waiting for you (Eph. 1:7-8)!

Procreation is Part of God’s Gift of Sexuality

Procreation is only possible through a man and a woman; homosexuality is 100% sterile. God’s first commandment was, “be fruitful and multiply” (Gen. 1:28). While healthy sexual relations within marriage are not solely for procreation, one must admit that without procreation, the human race would soon cease to exist.

As a husband and wife come together in one union, they create a family unit bringing forth a healthy environment for raising children and thus honoring God. He created man and woman to complement each other and God is perfect in all His ways.

Gen. 5:2 states, “He created male and female, God blessed them and called them mankind in the day they were created.”

When a child is born within these normative parameters of a family with a father and mother, they tend to prosper, are more secure and grow up to be responsible adults. They feel protected and have higher self-esteem. However, research shows children growing up in same-sex households have a higher likelihood they will experience sexual confusion, engage in risky sexual experimentation and later adopt a same-sex identity.[2][3][4][5]

The American College of Pediatricians argues that children benefit from both biological parents over same-sex parenting stating, “Decades of social science research documents that children develop optimally when reared by their two biological parents in a low conflict marriage.”[6]

Indeed, some heterosexual couples struggle with fertility complications which is the exception not the norm while same sex couples must adopt children because their norm is complete sterility. Thus, a family unit with a father and mother best honor God’s design and strengthen child development.

We Must Honor and Protect God’s Gift of Sexuality

Raising our children to protect their God-given sexuality from promiscuity and exploitation while valuing commitment in marriage are Biblical principles which enrich society. However, once mankind rebels against God’s definition of sexuality within marriage, societies embracing homosexuality have historically perverted the values of children, promoted hedonistic promiscuity and committed sexual exploitation. Just look at the ancient city of Sodom and Gomorrah:

GENESIS 19:4-5

“…the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. 5 And they called to Lot and said to him, ‘Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally.’”

Notice how every man, both young and old, ran to engage in sexual perversion with strangers without restraint. Jude reminds us of their consequence:

JUDE 1:7

“As Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, have given themselves over to sexual immorality, and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire…”

God brought severe judgement on this city and totally decimated it. There was no honor and no protection of God’s gift of sexuality.

When humans pervert sexuality to fulfill their own lust, there’s serious, long-term consequences upon society. Today we observe transgenderism dishonoring the unique sexuality of male and female, children mutilated through sexual ‘reassignment surgery’, promiscuity promoted in elementary school libraries and pornography pumped throughout our culture. When we stray from God’s standard of sexual morality we embrace a continual degradation of immorality.

Yet God’s Word honors the unique sexuality between male and female, warning us: “A Woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the Lord your God.” (Deut. 22:5)

Scripture calls us to guard our children in truth because:

ROMANS 1:18-20

“…the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse…”

1 CORINTHIANS 6:9-10

“Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.”

Yet listen to the very next verse: “And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.”

This is good news for us: God the Son came into this world to save us from our sins, all our sins including sexual ones! All we have to do is confess and believe in the name of Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior:

ROMANS 10:9-11

“if you confess with your mouth, the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart, that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation, for the Scripture says: ‘Whoever believes in Him will not be put to shame.’”

God loves us so much that He gave boundaries and rules regarding sexuality to protect us. It would do us well to obey Him.
