JOHN 14:6 (NKJV)
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” —Jesus Christ
What makes Jesus unique, above all other religions? For starters, what He said about Himself!
Many people believe the world’s religions are basically the same end to enlightenment by different paths of relative truth.
Yet Jesus Christ never presented Himself as merely another teacher pointing toward a god—He claimed to be God Himself (Jn. 8:58, Jn. 10:33), the absolute truth, and the only way to the Father! These extraordinary claims set Christianity apart from all other religions and deserve examination of who Jesus claimed to be, as written precisely in the Bible—the Word of God.
Salvation: Jesus Is the Only Way
Unlike other religions where mankind must strive to become better, Jesus answers humanity’s problem by showing us our hopeless inability to ever be right in the eyes of a perfect God. Our problem is not that we need better habits or a little spiritual improvement; it’s that we have sinned against God (Rom. 3:23) and our punishment is death (Rom. 6:23).
Consider this: if we speed and receive a traffic citation, no matter how good of a person we are, we still remain guilty before a judge and must pay the fine. How much higher are the impossible standards of trying to prove one’s self ‘good enough’ before a holy, eternal and perfect God? How can our good deeds ever undo the sins we have already committed?
This is why Jesus is the only way to God: while we were spiritually dead in our sins (Eph. 2:1), God took the initiative. God the Son entered our world, lived without sin (Heb. 4:15), and gave Himself for us on the cross, sacrificially paying for our sin, setting us free from Hell and eternal judgement (Acts 4:12) and thus restored our broken relationship with our Father God (Rom. 5:1) for all who trust in Him (Jn. 1:12).
Allah never sacrificed himself for our sin; Buddha never claimed to save us; Lord Krishna has never washed us clean in perfection. Unlike other world religions, Christianity is not about man ascending to God but rather about God the Son descending to man:
JOHN 3:16 (NKJV)
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
This salvation of God’s free gift by Grace through faith (Eph. 2:8) reconciling us back to Himself contradicts every other religion which focuses on man’s ability to better himself toward God:
2 CORINTHIANS 5:18-19 (NKJV)
“Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.”
Christ paid for our sins by His own shed blood (Eph. 1:7)—no other god did this—which is why the apostles proclaimed, “Nor is there salvation in any other” (ACTS 4:12).
While Judaism and Christianity share the Hebrew Scriptures and worship the God of Abraham, Judaism rejects Jesus as the promised Messiah and as God incarnate. Yet Christianity stands or falls on precisely this claim:
1 CORINTHIANS 15:14 (CEV)
“And if Christ wasn’t raised to life, our message is worthless, and so is your faith.”
Islam rejects Christianity by declaring, “And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them” (Qur’an 4:157), denying Jesus’ crucifixion, divine Sonship and eternal Godhead (Qur’an 4:171).
Buddhism focuses on the problem of suffering and the path toward liberation by one’s own effort while rejecting reconciliation to Father God through Christ’s atoning death.
Hinduism believes in 33 Koti gods—which many equate to 330 million gods—and yet Jesus Christ is never recognized among them.
So no, religions are not basically the same. If Jesus is who He claimed to be, then He is not merely one option among many but the only option.
Jesus Christ Foretold in Scripture
When we examine the written Word of God, we find miraculous detail. The Bible was written over a span of 1,500 years, contains 66 books, written in three major languages (Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek), authored by over 40 different people ranging from kings to fishermen, covers 5,000 years of human history and yet there are no discrepancies or inconsistencies! This miracle is worthy of discovering what Scripture claims about Jesus Christ.
The Old Testament is full of hundreds of prophecies of Jesus Christ, each with precise accuracy and astounding detail!
The promised Son of a virgin, written 740 years before Christ:
ISAIAH 7:14 (NKJV)
“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”
Fulfilled in Matt. 1:18.
The location of Jesus’ birth, written 735 years before Christ:
MICAH 5:2 (NKJV)
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.”
Fulfilled in Matt. 2:1–6.
The King who comes humbly on a donkey, written 520 years before Christ:
ZECHARIAH 9:9 (NKJV)
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.”
Exactly fulfilled in Matt. 21:4–9.
The suffering righteous one, written 1,044 years before Christ:
PSALMS 22:1,7-8,16-18 (NKJV)
“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?… They shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, 8 ‘He trusted in the Lord, let Him rescue Him; Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!’…The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet; 17 I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me. 18 They divide My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.”
Fulfilled in Matthew 27:39-46 and John 19:23-24. We see precise details of:
- Christ’s mockery endured
- People dividing His clothing and casting lots for it
- Roman crucifixion, piercing Him
- None of His bones being broken
- Christ’s words cried out from the cross to His Father
These details were prophesied before the gruesome practice of Roman crucifixion was even invented! How could anyone possibly know the future and write it down with such accuracy? Further, Roman guards would break the legs of prisoners being crucified so they died quicker but when they came to Jesus, He had already given up His spirit (Jn. 19:31-33) so none of His bones were broken (Jn. 19:36).
Why is this unique? Because Jesus, known as the lamb of God (Jn. 1:29) was a direct representation of the spotless passover lamb the Israelites ate during Passover, where none of its bones were to be broken (Ex. 12:46) and where God saved them through the blood of the lamb put on their doorposts (Ex. 12:7)!
And get this—Jesus was crucified during preparation of the passover (Jn. 19:14)!
It would not be possible for such perfect prediction of meticulous detail other than by the inspiration of God the Holy Spirit.
The Servant who bears our sins, written 740 years before Christ:
ISAIAH 53:5-6 (NKJV)
“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”
Fulfilled in John 19:36-37, 1 Peter 2:24-25
Jesus was the only one able and worthy to pay our ransom, in full, with His birth, death and resurrection. There is no one else who could save us. Jesus invites serious examination, not blind acceptance of a claim merely because a religious leader makes it.
Test Every Claim and Follow Truth
Why do we all long for spiritual and religious relationships? “He has put eternity in our hearts” (Ecc. 3:11)—we are created in God’s image and long for the relationship we were created for before sin entered the world, bringing destruction and death with it.
Satan will always offer us a “counterfeit” to fill our needs and pull us away from God. This counterfeit is seen in any other religious belief system other than Jesus Christ.
Jesus warned us many times about false teachers who come to “kill, steal and to destroy” (Jn. 10:10). Scripture repeatedly urges believers to exercise discernment: “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits” (1 Jn. 4:1). Jesus warned against false prophets (Matt. 7:15), and Scripture warns us that Satan can disguise himself even as an angel of light (2 Cor. 11:14).
And who was visited by “an angel of light”? Joseph Smith, founder of Latter Day Saints, (Mormonism) reported an angelic visit from Moroni while Mohammed, the founder of Islam, identifies Gabriel as the angel who revealed the Qur’an to him!
Yet the Apostle Paul warned the Galatians:
GALATIANS 1:8 (NKJV)
“But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.”
Satan has come into this world to deceive many and he uses false religions as the tool to do so:
1 PETER 5:8 (NKJV)
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”
True Christian beliefs are grounded in the Truth of God’s Word. There are no other religions that include such detailed, evidenced truth seen in Scripture by countless historical and archaeological proven truths of the Bible, verified eye witnesses of Jesus before and after His resurrection, and proven prophecies.
Further, Jesus’ own disciples willingly faced torture and even brutal deaths not for merely believing in Jesus but for the belief they had actually seen the risen Christ. Their willingness to suffer for their eye-witness testimony demonstrates the depth of their conviction.
Clearly, God wants us to know His living Word and to test all things against the Bible: to see if they are true. It is God’s love letter to us.
Read again what Jesus said about Himself and see how it contradicts all other religions:
JOHN 14:6 (NKJV)
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
Jesus is the Bread of Life (Jn. 6:35), the Light of the World (Jn. 8:12), the Good Shepherd (Jn. 10:11), the Resurrection and the Life (Jn. 11:25), and the True Vine (Jn. 15:1). He is the Christ, the Son of God (Matt. 16:16).
These are not merely religious titles—these are Truths pointing us to the One who came to seek and save the lost, who gave Himself for us, and who rose from the dead!
Jesus Christ paid the ultimate price, by His death and resurrection, to redeem and save us for all eternity. He is worthy of all praise and glory! You do not need to prove yourself worthy before coming to Him—simply believe in Jesus Christ and receive His free gift of everlasting life (Jn. 3:16; Acts 16:30–31)!
