Why Christians Must Oppose the Enneagram

The Enneagram must be opposed by Christians seeking the truth of Christ. Why you may ask? The Enneagram is rooted in witchcraft, overt spiritualism, occultist practice and focus on the ‘Essential Self’ doctrine, rather than on Christ. Here’s my research simply quoting what the founders believe – with works cited – so you can be aware and test all unsound churches promoting this false teaching. Also, the Christian Research Institute has a great review of Richard Rohr’s heresy in his book, Universal Christ.

  1. Enneagram diagram creator and self professed spiritual guru, George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff, states one’s “self” is asleep but can be awakened through meditation, analyzing one’s various “egos” and discovering their real “I”. [1]
  2. Gurdjieff declared the Enneagram contained all knowledge held within the cosmos. [2]
  3. Occultist, Óscar Ichazo, connected the Enneagram to personality, claiming the Archangel Metraton gave him the insight while he was high on mescaline. [3]
  4. Ichazo’s student, Claudio Naranjo admits on video he was guided by automatic writing (demonic possession) to write the nine personality traits of the Enneagram. [4]
  5. In 2016, Richard Rohr brought the Enneagram to the western Church. He’s a denounced Catholic mystic and ecumenical universalist, denying Christ’s blood sacrifice on the cross for sin’s atonement. Rohr claims Jesus is an incarnation of the spirit of Christ and teaches the Enneagram is “training people to read the soul.” [5]
  6. The Enneagram, not repentance and turning to Jesus, is seen as a way to God and coming to our essential self. “As Russ Hudson frequently emphasizes, ‘Type isn’t a ‘type’ of person, but a path to God.’ The nine types of the Enneagram form a sort of color wheel that describes the basic archetypes of humanity’s tragic flaws, sin tendencies, primary fears, and unconscious needs. The understanding of these components, when shaped through contemplative practice, helps us wake up to our True Self and come home to our essential nature.” [6]
  7. Secular news Medium reports how the Enneagram is uphending Christianity, especially among millennials, stating the “Enneagram has recently found a passionate following in the Evangelical world, drawing young believers culturally steeped as much in the self-centric spiritual practices of the secular world — astrology, self-care, the wellness industry — as they are in biblical teachings.” [7]
  8. Further, “Christians are shelling out hundreds of dollars for sessions with professional ‘Enneagram coaches’ to find their type and pursue self-development. Others spend even more to become coaches themselves. (Your Enneagram Coach, perhaps the premier Enneagram coaching service targeting Evangelicals, offers individual coaching sessions at $125 and a packaged series at $674. You can enroll in a course to become a coach yourself for $1,500.) ” [7]
  9. The Enneagram is not ‘just’ a personality test. Medium states, “most importantly, the function of the Enneagram is not to prescribe a set of traits that can be used to fashion or describe an identity – as with Myers-Briggs and many other personality-typing systems. With the Enneagram, the personality is just a set of coping mechanisms built around a person’s true self. To find one’s type is not the end point, but the beginning of a journey of self-discovery. This approach to thinking about oneself is a striking departure from the rigid moralism that draws stark lines between “good” and “bad” that Christians … have been steeped in. It allows – even encourages – worshippers to embrace their whole selves.” [7]
